Incremental Encoders
Application Examples
Motor Drives
Encoders are incorporated in motor drive control systems to provide closed loop feedback for a wide variety of position or velocity controlled applications. Incremental encoders are the dominant choice due to the wide acceptance of TTL type pulse trains. Other important features are ease of installation, high resolution capability (to 10,000 ppr) and encoder reliability.

Machine Tools
Machine tool positioning applications are ideally suited for incremental encoders. Resolutions up to 10,000 ppr and even sub-micron system resolutions can be obtained. Heavy duty incremental encoders are also available with the proper protection from the harsh machine tool environment. These encoders are completely sealed and equipped with heavier duty bearings to withstand increased axial and radial loading
Overhead Cranes
Overhead cranes require absolute position feedback to determine true position as soon as the power is turned on. It would take several minutes to initialize most overhead cranes after a power interruption with an incremental device. Multi-turn absolute encoders are rugged, reliable and able to transmit data over long distances in electrically noisy environments.
Copy Machines
Feedback from an incremental encoder is used to synchronize position of the various motion control functions inside the copier, including document feed, paper feed and collating. As a critical component to overall copier performance, encoder quality, resolution and trouble free operation are the key features.
Elevators
In this application, incremental rotary encoders provide important positioning data relative to the rate of speed or velocity of the elevator as it moves from floor-to-floor, as well as the position of the elevator door. A choice of mounting style, whether servo, flange mount or integrally coupled; a choice of heavy duty, modular or instrument grade models; and a choice of resolutions up to 10,000 ppr are all features that make it easy to select the right encoder for each application.
Automated Blood Analyzer
This blood analyzer is automated to eliminate the risk to lab technicians from manually handling possibly infectious blood samples. One encoder provides feedback to verify exact position of the syringe over the vial. A second encoder assures that the syringe is fully retracted before rotating the table to the next vial.
